The Milan Adventure

Milan is famous for its Fashion Week, as it’s one of the mayor fashion capitals in the world. But Milan’s more than just fashion alone! The historic buildings are beautiful and the vibes during ‘aperitivo’ are amazing. Some say that Milan isn’t the “real Italy”, but being a true Italy passionate and citytrip lover, I enjoyed my two days in Milan to the fullest. Have fun reading my Milan travel guide.

Pizza del Duomo

The Duomo del Milano is the most memorable landmark of the city, and that’s not without a reason. The construction of the Dom began in 1386 and took six centuries to finish. It’s an incredible example of Gothic architecture, from the outside’s flying buttresses, to the interior’s stained glass windows. But what I loved the most where the most amazing city views from the roof.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II

Opposite to the Duomo you’ll find the the beautiful Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II , which was was built in 1865 to honor the first king of Italy. The well-known shopping arcade contains luxury stores, such as Louis Vuitton, Swarovski and the first Prada store ever. Oh and make sure to stop by Gucci Café for a lovely Cappuccino.

Teatro alla Scala

Just a short walk from the Duomo, you can find the Teatro Alla Scala, one of the most important opera buildings in the world. Many of Italy’s best opera singers have performed here. During our visit there were no performances, but there’s a permanent museum, where you can find the props off all the opera’s that ever played in the Scala.

Piazza Mercanti

Piazza Mercanti is Milan’s most charming square. During the Middle Ages, the plaza was the commercial and governmental center of the city. Thanks to the well-preserved architecture, you almost feel like you fell back in those dark ages, except now the square is really quiet.

Via Monte Napoleone

If you’re up for some window-shopping, you must go to Via Monte Napoleone, the high end shopping street with boutiques such as Valentino, Gucci, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana. Make sure to visit the Armani Megastore. With its 8000 square feet, the boutique not just covers the different Armani fashion brands, but also furniture, flower and book shops designed by Mr. Armani. Simply bellissimo, if you ask me!

Sempione Park & Castello Sforzesco

For some nice and quiet, head to the Parco Sempione! In summer it’s the perfect place for a picnic. The park’s highlights are the Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle that houses multiple museums, and the Arco della Pace, the Arch of Peace dating back to the 19th century.

Milan does offer the full Italia experience! It’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. True, when it comes to culture, it doesn’t keeps you as busy as Rome and Florence, but the landmarks that are present, make it worth your while. After that there’s plenty of time for window-shopping or people watching on one of the charming terraces, preferable while sipping on a lovely cocktail. Hey, we’re in Italy…  ‘Dolce far niente’ right?!
